Always try to get it fixed as your first option

Chips often get bigger and can lead to cracks that may obstruct your view while driving, so you should get it fixed as soon as you can. The average cost to repair a windshield can range between $200 to $1,000. If you don’t have the time or the money at this particular moment, there are other options.

If you can’t afford to fix it right away

Cover the chip with tape to prevent any dirt from getting inside it. If this happens, it will make the chip more difficult to repair. Try to avoid any car washes and cold temperatures. As you put on the tape, try to not put too much pressure since it can cause the chip to become a bigger issue. Lastly, do not put any glue or adhesive inside the chip, it is often ineffective and can make the repair more difficult.

Things to keep in mind

If you think you can’t afford to fix the chip, your insurance may cover the service so check in to see what can happen. If the chip is less than ⅜ of an inch in diameter, it can be fixed but if it grows to a larger size, your windshield may need to be replaced entirely. The average cost of a windshield replacement is between $200 and $450.
